This is the first I’ve seen Rae Sensei at work, and I realize that dishonor is a wonky matchup for this deck, but are you getting enough bang for your buck with Rae? It seems like you could do just as well, or maybe much better, by letting the shugenjas do the dirty work. This opens up some of the best military spells that you’re not using like Stones of Purity, Guidance in War, Dragon’s Talon and, for Arc, Searing Seige. Honed to a Razor’s Edge and Servitors of Stone should be enough to keep the shugenja towers in the battle and straightened.
Yeah, that’s a great deck. It’s actually much better out of Unicorn – check the worlds winning deck or the Unicorn Shugs vs Philippines Crane match that’s going up today to see that one in action.
The strength of the Rae deck is that it’s nearly impossible to attack into, and puts other mid-game military decks in a disadvantageous position. That’s what the deck has to offer over other Shugenja tower decks. You have to read the field a bit to decide whether you want to play a deck like this, because if you expect a lot of honor/dishonor, you shouldn’t play the deck.
There are also tweaks you can do to shore up your honor/dishonor match. Alchemist lab can generate a lot of force in the mid-game. Mostly you just have to be lucky and hit your Burning Spirits quickly. These games I wasn’t and I lost. It’s OK to not beat everything — L5R is a game of matchups.
I’m not totally sold that shugenja tower is outright better out of Unicorn than Phoenix. Phoenix gets the benefit of cheap, in clan yojimbo for final sacrifice (and Eraki can get out of hand in a big battle if he’s not dealt with early on), the bump from way of the Phoenix and/or jade ascension can swing a game, and Kyokuta and Orinoko are platforms that Unicorn can’t match (though the best, cheap platform is still bat girl). I’ll definitely check out the Unicorn/Crane match.
